Shipping companies have embraced e-learning and blended learning training models as the digital evolution progresses in the shipping industry
With the development of artificial intelligence (AI) technology, shipowners and managers can start using AI to boost training tools, data analysis and chatbox functions to offer 24/7 support.
Columbia Group director of crewing and training Faouzi Fradi said the industry needs to embrace AI to enhance seafarer training. “We can use AI technology when it comes to training right now,” he said.
“We have seen how e-learning tools have boosted training and allowed seafarers to access learning materials while being out at sea, saving time and money, and giving crews instant access to support and knowledge,” Capt Fradi added. “AI could help us find areas we are failing in or where there are weaknesses and gaps.”
Columbia is looking at how AI can be used to boost training and work alongside existing staff to provide more information and reduce operational expenditure.
“I see AI as something that can be used alongside the personnel who work in our training departments,” said Capt Fradi.
“The savings from AI allow us to use our people more effectively. If we can use AI to go through hundreds of training materials to pick out what we should be using, it means our staff are going to be utilised in a better way,” he explained to Riviera Maritime Media.
“They can concentrate on providing better support to crews and use more of their time working on learning materials.”
Chatbox tools are also being introduced in the shipping industry to provide answers to operational, safety, technical and training questions.
“You have information at your fingertips, which is amazing,” said Capt Fradi. “Very few training centres offer a continuation of support and communication, so it is an extremely useful tool for seafarers.”
Using AI and chatbox functions can save time. For instance, it can search online training manuals to find particular information and provide it swiftly to the user.
“It is important AI technology is kept up-to-date and is advanced enough to know when it should refer the query to its human counterpart,” said Capt Fradi. “Chatbox is an amazing tool and it could even help save lives in the future.”
Training and crewing will be discussed at Riviera Maritime Media’s Offshore Support Journal Conference, Awards and Exhibition 2024 which will be held in London, 7-8 February 2024, click here to purchase tickets and attend this industry-leading event
