Meyer Werft and Carnival Corp USA have reached an agreement to build another cruise ship with delivery in 2028 for Carnival Cruise Line
This comes on the back of a mid-February order by Carnival Corp for an Excel-class cruise ship from Meyer Werft.
"The Excel class of Meyer Werft and Meyer Turku has been contributing to the success of Carnival Corp for several years now. We look forward to continuing this success story together," said Meyer Group chief executive Bernd Eikens.
Since 2018, Meyer Werft and Meyer Turku have built nine LNG-powered cruise ships for four cruise lines in the Carnival Corp portfolio on a joint technical platform.
The two new ships will be built on this platform and will accommodate more than 6,400 guests with a length of around 344 m and a size of around 180,000 gt.
"Carnival’s Excel-class fleet will soon be made up of a quintet of these very popular ships, offering excellent guest amenities and tremendous operational efficiencies," said Carnival Cruise Line president Christine Duffy. "Since the launch of Mardi Gras in 2021 and subsequent expansion with Carnival Celebration in 2022 and Carnival Jubilee in 2023, these Excel-class ships have been generating excitement, demand and high guest satisfaction."
Meyer Werft said in a statment that this second major order within a few weeks proves the turnaround in the cruise market, which has again reached, and in some cases exceeded, the record level of 2019.
"We see that the ships of the Meyer Group are very successful in operation and that we can therefore continue to operate this ship platform," explains Meyer Group chief sales officer Thomas Weigend.
The contract is subject to funding, which is expected to be completed later this year.
Meyer Werft’s orderbook now includes six cruise ships, a research vessel and steel construction for four offshore converter platforms.
