In 2023, London-based tech startup Carnot was awarded £2.3M (US$2.8M) from the UK government’s Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition to develop a zero-emissions 50-kW hydrogen auxiliary engine demonstrator and partner with Carisbrooke Shipping
The innovative Carnot project has the potential to revolutionise the shipping industry as it strives towards becoming more environmentally friendly.
This is an exciting development in the world of green technology and you can recognise this achievement by nominating Carnot for the Startup of the Year Award. Here are some reasons why:
- Carnot’s innovative use of hydrogen power promises zero emissions while providing significant energy savings compared with traditional fuel sources.

- The partnership between Carnot and Carisbrooke Shipping provides an opportunity to marinise this technology and put it through a sea trial.

- This project will have positive environmental implications and economic benefits such as job creation and increased revenue opportunities.

- Carnot is a revolutionary startup pioneering the use of technical ceramics in the development of hydrogen combustion engines.

- By tackling one of the major limiting factors to engine efficiency, Carnot has achieved brake thermal efficiency and reduced fuel consumption, enabling companies to generate the same power output with significantly lower costs.

- The project is led by Carnot Engines and its partners, including Carisbrooke Shipping, Brunel University and the Manufacturing Technology Centre with the support from the MCA & BV.

- After extensive design and simulations, the engine will be rigorously tested on a 40-day sea trial on one of Carisbrooke’s K-class cargo ships.

- This ground-breaking technology has been the result of years of hard work and dedication from all involved and deserves recognition for pushing boundaries in maritime engineering.
