Geoscience firm CGG has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Baker Hughes that will see the partners exploring jointly offered carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies
The MoU was signed at the 2024 Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) in Houston and envisions both sides supporting the rapid increase of CCS projects by providing fully integrated end-to-end services to screen, select, characterise and monitor potential carbon storage sites worldwide.
CGG executive vice president for Geoscience, Peter Whiting said, “CGG shares a strong commitment with Baker Hughes to actively support low-carbon markets with new technologies and business capabilities in carbon capture and storage. CCS is a high-growth market that is expected to play an important role in dealing with CO2 emissions. By combining the considerable expertise and complementary technologies of the two companies in the CCS arena, operators will benefit from more efficient and cost-effective solutions from two trusted market leaders.”
In February, CGG announced the release of an Asia Pacific carbon storage study to support and accelerate the screening process for all players in the region’s growing carbon capture and storage market.
The study ranks and prioritises opportunities at a large scale across 58 basins in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam to help identify the best basins and plays for potential carbon storage and continues to grow the company’s GeoVerse carbon storage portfolio, which includes studies for the North Sea and US Gulf of Mexico.
Baker Hughes has secured contracts in Malaysia to supply CO2 compression equipment to Petronas for its Kasawari offshore CCS project in Sarawak, Malaysia. The project is expected to be the world’s largest offshore CCS facility, with capacity to reduce up to 3.3M tonnes of CO2 per annum.
“The combination of Baker Hughes and CGG’s subsurface and surface capabilities will provide our customers in CCS an unmatched support to derisk technical and economic challenges from strategy, to CO2 storage site construction, and lifetime monitoring”, said vice president of oilfield services and equipment, new energies at Baker Hughes, Ahmed Eldemerdash.
“This alliance brings to bear fully complementary skillsets throughout the CCS value chain.”
