Chinese shipyards have launched and delivered several tugboats for domestic and international markets in September, keeping up construction progress on major projects
Rizhao Gangda Shipbuilding has launched the first of a series of harbour tugs it is building for the local port. It is constructing a 37-m azimuth stern drive (ASD) tug for Rizhao Port in China to a Robert Allan Ltd design, with 4,850 kW of installed power.
This RAmparts 3700-design tug was launched in August 2024, with a beam of 12 m, and will be completed by the end of this year. Its construction comes as the operator of Rizhao Port is expanding the berthing and undocking capacity and seeking to improve efficiency.
Cheoy Lee Shipyards has delivered two Z-Tech design tugs to support ships visiting ports in Thailand. RS Skye and RS Hunter were built to Robert Allan’s Z-Tech 5000 design for ASD tugs.
The Hong Kong-headquartered builder also completed the first newbuild tug it is producing for Rashied Maritime Services to support ships in Egypt. Verde Gee was built to Robert Allan’s RAstar 3200-CL design to handle vessels in the Port of Adabiya, with sister ships set to be finished in Q4 2024.
Jiangsu Zhenjiang Shipyard Group has launched several new pusher tugs and delivered vessels as part of COSCO Shipping Bulk Cargo Transportation Co’s Belt and Road project.
On 8 September 2024, the shipbuilder delivered two tugs and two barges as the fourth batch of vessels for the project.
The ASD tugboats each have an overall length of 37 m, a beam of 11 m, a hull depth of 4 m, a bollard pull ahead of 52 tonnes and astern of 44 tonnes, and a speed of 12 knots. The 12,000-dwt barges have a length of 111 m, a width of 30 m and a draught of 5 m.
These will be transported to support COSCO Shipping’s Guinea bauxite export project in West Africa.
As part of this project, Zhenjiang Shipyard in Jiangsu province launched two pusher tugs in September – Yick Tug 209 on 14 September and Yick Tug 2010 on 19 September. These are scheduled for completion by the end of this year.
On 6 September, the shipbuilder launched two tugboats by heavy lift for two different clients. It launched 3,676-kW ASD tugboat Yi Ming 6 for Jiangsu Zhencheng Tug Shipping Co and 3,824-kW ASD tugboat Da Hang Tuo 10 for Cangzhou Port.
Construction progressed on two other tugs at the shipyard in September, with the keel laid for a 3,824-kW ASD harbour tugboat for Zhangjiagang Port and for a multipurpose anchor-handling tugboat for CCCC First Harbor Engineering Co.
