A Cooper Group subsidiary has turned to a sister shipbuilding company to construct four more Z-drive tugboats to support ships in southern US ports
Crescent Towing will expand its fleet of harbour tugs operating in southern US harbours through an investment in four new azimuth stern drive (ASD) tugboats, each with two Z drives, at a shipyard in Alabama.
The Cooper Group subsidiary has turned to a sister shipbuilding company to construct these 4,475-kW tugs for deliveries in the next three years to enhance the company’s ship towage and handling capabilities on the Mississippi River.
Mobile-based Blakeley BoatWorks, also a Cooper Group subsidiary, will build these 28-m tugs to a design by Crowley Engineering Services and ABS class, with one scheduled for delivery in 2027, another in 2028 and the final two in the series in 2029.
Once delivered, Crescent Towing’s fleet will include 15 ASD tugs working in three ports: New Orleans in Louisiana, Mobile, and Savannah in Georgia.
“Our ongoing newbuild initiative, in partnership with Blakeley BoatWorks, reflects our investment in reliability, performance, and strength of our fleet,” said Crescent Towing president Scott Cooper.
“We are excited to continue this initiative long-term to further strengthen our fleet and reinforce our commitment to delivering the industry’s highest quality of service.”
These ABS-class escort tugs will be sister vessels to 2025-built Angus R Cooper II and 2026-built Kentucky.
They will have a beam of 11.6 m, a draught of 5.8 m, and will be compliant with US Environmental Protection Agency Tier 4 emissions requirements.
Crescent said these tugs would be powered by twin Caterpillar 3516E high-speed, four-stroke diesel engines, each producing 2,240 kW to power Kongsberg 255 fixed-pitch azimuth Z-drives.
They will have a capacity to store 43,846 gallons of fuel and 16,811 gallons of potable water.
“This vessel class has proven to be efficient and reliable through the exceptional performance of Kentucky and Angus R Cooper II,” said Crescent Towing executive vice president Keith Kettenring.
“We will further modernise and strengthen our fleet with four additional Z-drive tugs from Blakeley BoatWorks to provide our customers with the most reliable service possible.”
Blakeley BoatWorks is equipped with a 1,900-ton floating dry dock, 660-ton travel lift, and four covered fabrication shops.
