New onboard devices enable crews to monitor and manage smart refrigerated and dry containers in real time while in transit
Container ship crews can monitor refrigerated and dry containers during voyages using devices developed by a satellite constellation owner. Any change in temperature or power supply on these containers would issue an alert to crew members’ mobile devices, enabling a fast onboard response to issues.
Orbcomm introduced CrewView to enable seafarers to manage the condition of containers, and react to issues, reducing the risk of cargo spoilng.
“CrewView enables early detection of container issues such as power failures or temperature deviations, helping crews take faster action to protect cargo and maintain operational continuity,” said Orbcomm chief executive Sameer Agrawal. “CrewView solves a critical blind spot in end-to-end container monitoring and management. By automating monitoring tasks, detecting issues early and enabling data-driven decisions, CrewView optimises crew efficiency, helps to reduce cargo spoilage and provides visibility and transparency both on board and ashore.”
This product uses solutions from Vobal Technologies, which Orbcomm acquired assets from in May 2025.
CrewView has been piloted on ships operated by several global shipping lines, delivering measurable improvements in onboard response time and cargo security.
“We have been using Vobal’s technology as a partner for the last 10 years,” said Mr Agrawal. “With smart containers becoming the industry standard, we decided it was time to own the core technology and strengthen our maritime portfolio.”
In addition, Orbcomm’s satellites support vessel-to-shore data transmissions for container monitoring by onshore teams.
Container loading and stowage information automatically displays interactive bay, row and tier maps in the Orbcomm maritime platform. Application interfaces enable data exchanges with third-party platforms and alerts from third-party devices.
