The US Department of Energy (DOE) has launched the FLoating Offshore Wind ReadINess (FLOWIN) Prize as part of an effort to build the supply chain in America
Part of DOE’s American-Made Challenges series, the three-phase, US$6.9M investment is designed to pave the way for cost-effective domestic manufacturing and deployment of commercial-scale floating offshore windfarms.
About two-thirds of the US offshore wind resource is in water more than 60 m deep, meaning floating platforms are needed.
The FLOWIN Prize will encourage collaboration among companies needed to manufacture and deploy floating offshore wind energy technologies. It will also help optimise platform designs to enable easier production within US infrastructure capabilities and constraints and support the development of plans to move toward widespread floating offshore wind energy deployment.
Another aim is to help prepare US manufacturing, ports and vessel infrastructure for floating wind.
Eligible FLOWIN Prize teams must have an existing floating offshore wind substructure design and include members with expertise in wind energy technology and others specialising in expanding supply chains and infrastructure.
In the first phase, companies will focus on confirming they have a design ready to move toward mass manufacturing and that they understand the steps needed to achieve full-scale product commercialisation.
In phases two and three, teams will refine their design and develop a roadmap toward mass manufacturing and deployment, first focusing broadly and then on a specific example region of the US.
Phase One is now open for submissions and will close 13 January 2023.
