Eastern Pacific Shipping (EPS) has retrofitted a bulk carrier and Suezmax tanker with autonomous navigation technology, marking further industry acceptance of AI-driven navigation
The shipowner contracted Avikus to supply the equipment, marking the Korean firm’s first commercial installation outside its home market. The Singapore-based agreement covers deploying HiNAS Control and HiNAS Cloud systems, with full commissioning and crew training included.
HiNAS Control’s safety capabilities extend beyond basic route optimisation through sophisticated AI and sensor fusion technology. The system integrates data from multiple navigation instruments using artificial intelligence and augmented reality to autonomously recognise changing sea states, wave heights and weather conditions. The technology suggests or automatically implements collision-avoidance routes, while maintaining optimal speeds even in adverse conditions.
"This partnership will accelerate our digital transformation while delivering measurable performance and sustainability gains," said EPS technical director Sachin Saharawat.
Avikus, an HD Hyundai subsidiary, has equipped more than 350 vessels with its navigation assistance systems across newbuild and retrofit applications.
