Delegates at Riviera Maritime Media’s Maritime Decarbonisation Conference, Asia, held in Singapore, heard how the European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) has introduced a new layer of complexity for the maritime industry
A panel comprising Purus’ Lynn Chua, BW Epic Kosan’s Capt Anand Mannath, Fratelli Cosulich Bunkers’ Diana Mok, European Energy Exchange’s Erlend Engelstad and Stephenson Harwood’s Rachel Hoyland shared their insights on the challenges and opportunities. A common view was that the maritime industry has now transitioned from a preparation phase to an implementation phase, bringing new challenges to the forefront.
Ms Hoyland highlighted the importance of prioritising actions when addressing EU ETS compliance. The first step is to determine the appropriate ‘shipping company’ through the mandate provision. Once this is established, companies can focus on other obligations such as attribution, opening accounts and surrendering allowances.
