PSA Marine of Singapore is the first owner to operate a newbuild of the latest tugboat design from a leading naval architect in the sector
Cheoy Lee Shipyards has delivered PSA Gemini, the first tug built to Robert Allan Ltd’s Z-Tech 6000 design.
The British Columbia, Canada naval architects said 15 more vessels are on order or under construction to this design for operations in Singapore, Panama, Thailand and Peru.
ABS-classed PSA Gemini has an overall length, excluding fenders, of 30 m, a moulded beam of 12 m, a maximum draught of 5 m and accommodation for 10 crew members.
It has twin Niigata 6L28HX medium-speed engines rated at 1,654 kW, driving Niigata ZP-31B Z-drives, each with a propeller of 2.3 m, enabling this vessel to achieve a bollard pull of 65 tonnes and a top speed of 13 knots during sea trials.
It is equipped with a towing winch on the forward working deck, with a deck crane and dual anchor windlasses aft.
The winch and windlasses were provided by Ibercisa and the crane by Palfinger. It can store 130 m3 of fuel oil and of 35 m3potable water.
“The bulwarks and fendering have been specifically tailored to PSA Marine’s operations with considerations for towline and fender wear while assisting a vessel ranging from container ships to low-freeboard barges,” said Robert Allan.
The bow fendering consists of an upper course of strapless cylindrical fender, and a lower course of W-fender underneath.
Shear line fendering consists of square fendering around the vessel with a smaller diameter cylindrical fender at the stern.
“Providing a versatile base platform, alternative variants of the Z-Tech 6000 have been configured to suit operations worldwide with varied deck equipment, crew complement, bollard pull, and fire-fighting capabilities,” said Robert Allan.
