US-based offshore support vessel (OSV) owner Harvey Gulf International Marine (HGIM) has taken delivery of Harvey Power, its second tri-fuelled platform supply vessel (PSV), following its retrofit with a battery system
After its retrofit, the 94.5-m PSV can operate on LNG, electric battery power and ultra-low sulphur diesel. Earlier this year, Wärtsilä ordered four 745-kWh Orca Energy energy storage systems (ESS) from Corvus Energy to support the conversions of HGIM’s Harvey Power, Harvey Liberty, Harvey Freedom and Harvey America.
The ESS and Wärtsilä energy management system will allow the vessels to operate in dynamic positioning mode on a single engine augmented by battery power, to operate more efficiently in transit and other operational modes, and to operate on battery power only when stationary.
HGIM opted for the retrofits following the success of Harvey Energy, the first LNG-battery hybrid conversion of a PSV in the Americas.
Built to ABS class, the US-flag Harvey Power is dynamic positioning class 2 capable, with a deadweight of 5,312 long tonnes, accommodation for 42 and maximum speed of 14 knots. Propulsion is supplied by three Wärtsilä 6L34DF dual-fuel diesel generators and two Wärtsilä FS300-S/WN nozzled azimuthing propellers.
The remaining three conversions are expected to be completed by 31 March 2022.
Besides the battery package, HGIM is equipping Harvey Power with a real-time emissions monitoring system. The system will provide data that will allow HGIM to track emissions from operating Harvey Power using one or more fuel sources. This will provide HGIM with data from operating the vessel on LNG as a single fuel source, combined fuel sources using LNG and battery power, and diesel and battery power.
Data from this real-time emissions system will allow the OSV owner to quantify to charterers and investors the emissions reductions that can be obtained using the various fuel sources as compared with diesel only.
HGIM plans to install real-time emissions monitoring systems on all five of its tri-fuelled OSVs.
