South Korea’s flagship carrier will deploy AI-powered autonomous navigation units on 40 container ships to optimise voyages, save money, reduce crew workloads and the risk of maritime accidents
HMM will install autonomous navigation systems on 40 container ships to strengthen its fleet competitiveness, raise safety and reduce crewing.
The South Korean shipowner has contracted HD Hyundai’s specialised autonomous navigation subsidiary, Avikus, to provide HiNAS Control units for these vessels to navigate without crew involvement.
“The core of this collaboration is to enhance the effectiveness of autonomous technology through real-world data while strengthening fleet competitiveness,” said HMM chief executive Won-hyuk Choi.
“We expect to build a sustainable operation system by improving efficiency and safety while reducing the workload of our seafarers.”
Avikus said HiNAS is powered by artificial intelligence (AI), can set optimal routes and navigate without crew intervention. It helps to prevent maritime accidents by using AI for real-time situational awareness.
It can maintain optimal speeds to maximise fuel savings and operational efficiency, and provide a “solution to the global shortage of seafarers by reducing crew workloads.”
In tandem with the supply contract, Avikus, HMM, and HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering have signed a memorandum of understanding to co-operate on AI-based autonomous navigation technology.
This partnership plans to secure global standards in the evolving shipping market; advance the development and supply of autonomous navigation devices; share real-world voyage data from operations on HMM vessels; and provide technical support for system integration.
“This landmark contract with HMM marks a definitive shift as autonomous navigation moves from technical validation into the era of large-scale commercialisation,” said Avikus chief executive Jay H Kang.
“By surpassing the 100-vessel milestone through this deepened collaboration with HMM, we are not just demonstrating a technology, we are delivering a proven commercial standard that enhances the economic and operational competitiveness of the global fleet.”
According to Avikus, the 40-ship contract is the largest single supply contract for autonomous navigation solutions to date.
