Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) has held a naming ceremony for 24,000-TEU HMM Algeciras, the world’s largest container ship
The event took place at Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering’s (DSME) Okpo shipyard in Geoje, Korea.
HMM Algeciras is the first of 12 24,000-TEU vessels scheduled to be sequentially delivered until September 2020.
In September 2018, HMM signed a contract for 20 eco-friendly mega container vessels with three shipyards – DSME, Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) and Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) – in an “effort to take proactive actions towards market change as well as to form a sustainable profit-generating structure”, the carrier said in a statement.
DSME and SHI are building seven and five 24,000-TEU container ships, respectively, which are expected to be delivered by the end of September 2020. HHI is constructing eight 16,000-TEU container ships to be delivered from Q2 2021.
HMM is boosting its environmental capabilities by operating its new mega box ships.
The vessels are equipped with a scrubber system, while an optimised hull design and highly-efficient engines are also expected to improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions.
“For me, it is very meaningful that HMM takes delivery of the most technologically advanced container ship in this difficult time. I would like to celebrate it and hope that HMM continues to secure a competitive advantage as a Korean national flagship carrier,” said Republic of Korea president Moon Jae-in.
“HMM will strive to expand its presence in the global shipping industry based on optimised fleet management and new co-operation with THE Alliance,” added HMM chief executive and president Bae Jae Hoon.
HMM Algeciras will be deployed on Far East Europe 4 (FE4) service, one of the Asia-Northern Europe trade lanes of THE Alliance, with its port rotation starting at Qingdao, Busan, Ningbo, Shanghai, Yantian, Suez Canal, Rotterdam, Hamburg, Antwerp, London Gateway, then Singapore via Suez Canal.
Riviera will host a series of free to attend 45-minute webinars on subjects ranging from maritime propulsion to vessel optimisation, ballast water management and maritime air pollution among many others commencing 5 May 2020. Find a list of the webinars and register your interest now
