CO2 loading trials test low-pressure containment, as interface standards and alternative liquefaction routes remain under development
Capital Gas Ship Management (CGSM) said its 22,000-m³ liquefied CO2 multigas carrier Active completed a two-week CO2 gas trial campaign using “low-pressure technology” at Hyundai Mipo Dockyard.
CGSM reported that more than 54 truckloads of “domestically sourced CO2” supported validation of the cargo tanks and cargo management systems, and it characterised the design point as “next-generation low-pressure technology (8.0 barg/-55°C)”.
The liquefied CO2 multigas carrier Active was launched at HD Hyundai Mipo in South Korea and was described by CGSM as “the world’s largest liquefied carbon dioxide carrier”.
The vessel is being constructed to Lloyd’s Register class, will use IMO Type C storage tanks, and is one of four 22,000-m³ low-pressure LCO2 carriers ordered for delivery in 2026.
How CO2 is shipped has been discussed at Riviera’s CO2 shipping and storage conferences, where industry participants viewed the ship-shore alignment as the near-term constraint, rather than ship design maturity.
Bureau Veritas global market leader for gas carriers Carlos Guerrero noted, “We do not need to start from zero, but we do need to act now,” warning without standardised ship-shore interface protocols, early commercial operations could be delayed.
He said work is underway to adapt LNG standards such as ISO 28460 for CO2, but added, “If there is no alignment, it could cause operational delays.”
HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering senior vice president Byeongyong Yoo also noted, “The ship is fully developed from our side,” but added, “the next step depends on terminal readiness”.
That is the stage being reviewed by CGSM and partners with a meticulously planned two-week CO2 gas trial campaign. The technical expertise learned will be an important topic at the CO2 Shipping, Terminals and CCS conference, APAC.
Riviera’s CO2 Shipping, Terminals and CCS Conference, APAC, will be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 30 March 2026. Click here for more information on this industry-leading event.
