Iranian missiles and drones have struck ports and terminals across the Middle East in retaliation to Israeli and US aerial attacks this weekend
Crew casualties grow as commercial vessels take fire in escalating US-Israeli and Iranian conflict
Governments and agencies across the Middle East have reported missile and drone attacks from Iran on harbours and terminals, causing damage, injury, disruption and port closures, according to local reports.
Infrastructure has been struck in Bahrain, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), resulting in damage to quaysides, naval bases and warehouses.
After the latest attacks, governments in Oman and Qatar condemned Iranian strikes on the commercial port of Duqm in Oman, shipping off their coasts and in Doha.
Duqm port was targeted by two drones, injuring a worker, the state news agency said.
In the UAE, Jebel Ali Port in Dubai was struck by debris from an intercepted Iranian missile, causing a fire at a quayside berth. Dubai Civil Defence teams responded and successfully contained the fire, preventing further damage and injuries.
DP World said on 2 March that operations at Jebel Ali port have resumed.
Other targets of Iranian attacks in Dubai focused on the international airport, Burj Al Arab, and Palm Jumeirah hotels, causing fires and injuries.
In Abu Dhabi, smoke was reported in Zayed Port after a missile struck infrastructure close to where cruise liner Mein Schiff 4, operated by TUI Cruises, was anchored with more than 2,500 passengers and 1,000 crew members on board.
In Bahrain, the Interior Ministry said Iran had targeted US naval facilities near the Mina Salman port in Manama causing a damaging fire.
Saudi Arabia’s Defence Ministry said state-run energy group Aramco has temporarily closed operations at the Ras Tanura refinery after a double drone attack on the facility.
Air defences intercepted these drones, but debris caused fires which were quickly brought under control. The terminal remains closed to assess damage and carry out repairs, said Aramco.
