With the increasing risk of ship accidents, Turkey’s Directorate General of Coastal Safety has ordered two of its most powerful emergency response tugs
Turkey’s Directorate General of Coastal Safety (KEGM) has ordered two 42-m salvage and escort tugs from Med Marine, which will be built at the Eregli Shipyard on Turkey’s Black Sea coast.
These vessels will have a bollard pull of 130 tonnes and a speed of 14 knots, making them the most powerful built in Turkey for the domestic market.
KEGM is the operational workforce of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure at sea, offering emergency response and ship escort around the coastal waters of Turkey.
“We provide uninterrupted services at the highest level to enhance navigational safety as well as the safety of life, property and the environment,” said KEGM board chairman and director general, Mustafa Bankaoglu.
“National and domestically developed projects are being steadily implemented. We have now signed for the construction of two emergency response tugboats, which will each have a minimum bollard pull of 130 tonnes and will stand as the most powerful escort tugs in Turkey.”
These tugs will have accommodation for 11 crew members, a beam of 16 m, a depth of 6 m and a maximum draught of around 7 m.
Each vessel will be fitted with an advanced off-ship fire-fighting system in accordance with FiFi1 class requirements, to include two engine-driven pumps feeding monitors capable of delivering 1200 m³/hr of water and 300 m³/hr of foam, all supplied by Fire Fighting Systems.
Their robust fendering layout includes cylindrical and W-shaped block fenders on the bow and D-shaped fendering along the sheer lines, providing safe and reliable manoeuvring in high-risk operations.
Med Marine and Eregli Shipyard chairman Recai Hakan Şen said this is “a strategically important project” for maritime safety in Turkey.
“These powerful tugboats are more than just vessels – they represent our responsibility to contribute to the safety of Turkish waters with the same care and precision we bring to every project, near or far,” he said.
