Shipping lines and cargo owners will be able to monitor containers more effectively following the launch of a new dry container tracking sensor
Maritime internet of things (IoT) is enabling cargo owners and ship operators to track and better understand container movements across oceans and while digitalising their supply chains.
The latest telematics technologies enable improved planning and optimised container transits, cutting fuel consumption and emissions during sea voyages.
Orbcomm has introduced a new dry container telematics product enabling end-to-end monitoring of cargo through maritime voyages and onshore supply chains.
This solar-powered tracking device reports a container’s location worldwide using satellite communications to Orbcomm’s Maritime platform and through applying interfaces to third-party proprietary platforms.
It delivers container visibility and cargo status monitoring with current and historical location reporting, improving planning and optimising transit times to lower the carbon footprint of the whole route.
This tracker can be installed in one minute with minimum asset downtime and no need for manual intervention after installation.
For increased security, optional door sensors can be deployed to detect when container doors are opened. They send automated alerts to operators, allowing them to identify potential unauthorised access, tampering and/or theft.
These devices are certified to the ATEX Zone 2 explosion-proof standard. Additional wireless Bluetooth-connected sensors could be supported to integrate other safety and productivity applications.
“Our new dry container telematics solution enables the industry’s largest shipping lines to cost-effectively deploy smart devices across their fleet and seamlessly manage their maritime operations at any point in the supply chain,” said Orbcomm senior vice president of product management Gregg Plonisch.
Orbcomm said its next development will be to relaunch Orbcomm ReeferConnect as the rebranded Orbcomm Maritime platform later Q4 2023, with updated user interfaces and more data insights.
“With Orbcomm’s enhanced maritime platform, customers can view all of their assets in a single platform, enabling better decision making, business planning and service levels, while contributing to end-to-end digitalisation of complex supply chains,” said Mr Plonisch.
This platform will also support generator set monitoring, which Orbcomm said will be commercially available later this year.
“Combining real-time asset visibility and fuel status reporting, customers will be able to improve genset utilisation, optimise fuel usage, accurately plan refuelling and avoid emergency genset stops,” said Mr Plonisch.
