GMT - ONLINEAn upgraded floating production facility in the US Gulf has been relocated to the Keathley Canyon area and connected to a 5G/LTE network for the Leon-Castile project
LLOG Exploration has deployed mobile communications network technology on its refurbished floating production unit (FPU) that is producing hydrocarbons from two fields in a deepwater area of the Gulf of America.
The Louisiana-headquartered operator had selected Tampnet to supply 4G/5G long-term evolution (LTE) communications technology for the Salamanca FPU, which is processing oil and gas from the Leon and Castile fields in the Keathley Canyon.
For this project, the former Independence Hub FPU was refurbished and subsea pipelines were laid in ultra deepwater, with Tampnet extending its subsea fibre backbone by 140 km and its 4G/5G LTE coverage by around 10,000 km2.
Tampnet’s fibre connectivity and private 5G with secure network slicing was designed for high-bandwidth industrial use and integrates with FirstNet and AT&T for communications. It is supported by low Earth orbit satellite back-up for uninterrupted connectivity.
LLOG started production on the Salamanca FPU in September and is working to ramp up output with more wells expected to be tied in during 2026, to help reach production capacity of 60,000 barrels of oil and 0.028M m3 of gas per day.
“We continue to invest in the infrastructure that enables the offshore energy industry to embrace digital transformation fully, to be prepared for the data demands driven by artificial intelligence, automation and digital twins,” said Tampnet chief executive Elie Hanna.
Tampnet’s US Gulf network now exceeds 1,700 km of subsea fibre, connecting over 20 offshore facilities to a regional connectivity network.
Partners in Salamanca FPU and Leon and Castile fields are LLOG as operator, Repsol and OG Oil & Gas. First oil was achieved through one well drilled into the Leon field and tied into the FPU.
“Since Repsol drilled the discovery well at Leon in 2014, we have been working diligently to advance this important project in the US Gulf,” said Repsol Gulf of America business unit director, David Ramos.
“The opportunity to jointly develop Leon and Castile reflects our strategy to safely and efficiently deliver better barrels in established basins like the US Gulf, where we already have the technical expertise, experienced partners and a strong legacy of success.”
LLOG is building production and reserves in the ultra-deepwater area of the Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America) and its potential next growth phase is expected to revolve around the Blacktip and Blacktip North and Leopard discoveries in the Perdido area, with potential start-ups through subsea infrastructure and FPUs around 2029-2030.
