Resorts World Cruises has become the first Asian cruise line to deploy an integrated hybrid satellite communications system involving multiple constellations and orbits to deliver reliable high-speed connectivity to passengers
It has contracted SES to install and provide communications over the O3b medium earth orbit (MEO) and Starlink low earth orbit (LEO) satellites on a flagship cruise vessel.
Resorts World Cruises had this mPower + Starlink Pro solution installed on 2016-built, 335-m Genting Dream as part of its strategy to boost connectivity for guests and crew up to 1.5 Gbps across this 150,695 gt ship.
Following this success, Luxembourg-headquartered SES could deploy this integrated service on other Resorts World cruise ships.
“We are constantly striving to enhance our onboard guests’ experiences with best-in-class hospitality and services, complemented by the latest innovations and technology offerings,” said Resorts World Cruises president Michael Goh.
“In this digital age, state-of-the-art connectivity is at the heart of many holidays. As such, we engaged SES to pioneer connected experiences at sea, while also making the most of this connectivity to optimise our operations.”
SES is in currently launching and commissioning its second-generation MEO constellation, O3b Power, and acquiring rival satellite owner Intelsat. It already provides connectivity to cruise ships using its very small aperture terminal (VSAT) technology and Ku-band communications.
