RISE project manager Fredrik von Elern explains elements of a study at Swedish research institute RISE into the use of artificial intelligence on tankers
Mr Elern will present a preliminary study paper at the International Chemical & Product Tanker Conference in London in April 2023 regarding the use of artificial intellingence (AI) technology in both tankers and cargo ships.
The paper will offer insight into AI’s ability to improve working conditions for crew onboard as well as for shore-side planning roles. Overall, the aim of the project is to explore the potential benefits of using AI and machine learning in autonomous cargo handling, which could lead to more efficient and safer cargo operations.
Mr von Elern noted that an AI system could, for example, suggest how to line up cargo handling, which would be given to the mate for approval, and could also generate suggestions for the operation itself. No system currently exists to compare data from previous cargo handling operations for help in suggesting how to proceed with cargo planning. This, too, could be taken on with AI and would simplify the work of the chief officer.
Mr von Elern also said that the AI system could implement a machine learning function to come up with operational suggestions, giving advice such as how to adjust the ballast to keep the vessel in a certain condition.
Although he said it is too early to know the details of how the AI would work in practise, the project is looking at a specific vessel’s experience from different ports, and how to give a better prediction on the time of completion. The more data that AI has, the more accurate it will be, he said.
