Boskalis is set to acquire a fleet of the most powerful deepsea towage vessels in the world
Altera Infrastructure FFTA Holdings is selling ALP Maritime Services and its fleet of eight anchor-handling salvage tugs, used for ship and casualty towing following salvage and for deepsea towage, to Boskalis Holding which is owned by HAL Investments Group.
This deal will see Boskalis expand its abilities for towing ships, maritime structures and floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) units worldwide.
Altera Infrastructure will exit from this segment of the market, enabling it to focus on expanding its position in FPSO ownership, leasing and management.
News of this corporate acquisition filtered out after the Brazilian Administrative Council for Economic Defence (CADE) approved the deal. According to an unofficial social media community, CADE analysed the acquisition request and concluded “the transaction does not raise major concerns in terms of competition due to the low market shares held by the companies” in the anchor handling tug and offshore support vessel segments.
“In this way, the CADE board decided to approve it without restrictions.” This was published on the Official Gazette early in February 2024.
Boskalis is a global marine services company, active in dredging, offshore installations and transport, underwater services and towing. It is one of the world’s largest providers of salvage and emergency response services.
Demand for FPSO construction, towage, commissioning and installation is climbing as energy companies develop more of the world’s deepwater oil and gas fields using networks of subsea infrastructure linked to the production and export units.
ALP’s fleet are powerful and versatile DP2 dynamic positioning vessels designed for long-distance towing and anchor handling with bollard pulls of more than 200 tonnes.
Also in early February, Norway-based marine operations provider Ocean Installer has pooled resources with ALP to support its FPSO towing and hook-up work-scopes, with Ocean Installer chartering three ALP vessels to ensure it has sufficient capacity to support its clients projects.
“The collaboration with ALP and the chartering of its vessels will further strengthen Ocean Installer’s position going into a busy season,” said Ocean Installer vice president of contracts and procurement Kjell Arild Berge.
“We will offer these vessels as part of our services to clients, from end-to-end towing and hook-up of FPSOs. We also have a new global supplier on our list of collaborative partners. By teaming up with ALP and its vessels, we are even better positioned to exceed our clients’ expectations worldwide.”
Some of ALP’s vessels may be deployed to Angola after Ocean Installer, in consortium with Oceaneering, gained a contract from TotalEnergies to execute the transport and installation work of the Girassol Life Extension project.
This is part of TotalEnergies’ campaign to extend the life of the FPSO, which has been working on Block 17 in Angola from 2001 to 2031.
Riviera Maritime Media’s OSJ Conference, Americas, part of the annual global OSJ Conference series, returns to Houston in June 2024. This two-day event will bring together the OSV Community to explore emerging opportunities in the resurgent regional offshore energy sector, including traditional oil and gas and wind.
