Classification society DNV has provided its first cyber-security approval for maritime digital solutions just prior to upgraded industrywide rules being implemented
Kongsberg Digital is the first to receive approval from DNV that its Vessel Insight vessel-to-cloud data collection system is secure from cyber threats to new unified requirements from the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS).
DNV renewed data collection infrastructure D-INF type-approval for Vessel Insight to include cyber security level SP1, ensuring compliance with IACS UR E27, which covers the cyber resilience of onboard systems and equipment.
IACS UR E27 is becoming mandatory for classed vessels contracted for construction on or after 1 July 2024. DNV said it brings the maritime industry forward in terms of ensuring cyber security for digitalisation solutions.
Kongsberg Digital obtained an initial D-INF type-approval certificate and cyber security level SP1 for Vessel Insight in 2022. But, with upcoming IACS UR E27 requirements these needed to be recertified.
“This ensured the cyber-security capabilities of the vessel-to-shore solution are meeting the upcoming IACS UR E27 requirements,” said DNV principal engineer for digital ship systems Qitao Gan.
“Type approval also eases the acceptance by vessel owners, builders, other end-to-end solution providers and third-party verifiers.”
Acceleration of digitalisation in the maritime industry increases reliance on secure data collected from onboard components and systems, including classed standards and security protocols.
“IACS E27 represents a significant improvement in cyber security compared with previous regulations,” said Kongsberg Digital vice president for maritime products Anders Bryhni.
“This is a class societies’ umbrella-wide requirement which means all need to comply. Now Vessel Insight is assessed and approved for these rules, individual vessels can be compliant with small audits from class societies,” he added.
