Manufacturers of specialised marine equipment have announced contracts in January 2025 for newbuilds ordered in 2024, as owners react to strengthening markets and demand
Manufacturers of specialised marine equipment have announced contracts to outfit newbuild offshore construction and subsea support and maintenance vessels ordered in 2024.
Shipyards secured orders last year for series of vessels supporting offshore platform and subsea construction and maintenance as owners reacted to rising demand and high utilisation levels in these markets.
Seaonics has won a contract to deliver electric-controlled motion compensated (ECMC) gangways and ECMC 3D cranes to Vard for installation on a series of five walk-to-work offshore newbuilds under construction in its shipyard in Vietnam.
Ålesund, Norway-headquartered Seaonics said these ECMC systems will support the transfer of people and cargo from these vessels to offshore oil and gas production structures during comprehensive maintenance programmes, “ensuring smooth and precise movements even in challenging sea conditions.”
These cranes will have a motion-compensated lifting capacity of 15 tonnes for a 3D lift and 15 tonnes motion-compensated subsea lift. They will be powered by a DC grid and battery pack on the vessels.
Vard Vung Tau shipyard is responsible for building, equipping, sea trials and delivery of these five ships of VARD 3 32 design, with all five due to be delivered in 2027.
Vard has also ordered several launch and recovery systems (LARS) for remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) for ESCVs it is building for Island Offshore to its Vard 3 25 design. For this contract, Ulmatec Handling Solutions will supply E-LARS with advanced features such as active heave compensation, to operate in ultra deepwater and in the adverse sea and weather conditions.
“These vessels are state-of-the-art hybrid powered vessels, and our partnership with Ulmatec on the LARS systems will ensure that we can operate with the highest level of efficiency and safety,” said Island Offshore technical manager, Trond Hauge.
In Norway, Ålesund-based Hydroniq Coolers secured a contract from Myklebust Verft to supply marine cooling systems for two subsea support vessels being built for Rem Offshore. Myklebust Verft is building an energy subsea construction vessel (ESCV) and another vessel for subsea inspection, maintenance and repair work for the Norwegian owner.
In another contract award announced ahead of Riviera’s Annual Offshore Support Journal Conference, Exhibition & Awards, being held 3-5 February, Hydroniq Coolers will supply its Pleat seawater coolers for both vessels. These will use seawater to reduce the temperature of the ships’ main motors, engines, propulsion system and other auxiliary systems to avoid critical systems overheating.
Rem’s ESCV will be equipped with dual-fuel methanol engines in combination with battery packs for low-emissions propulsion and dynamic positioning. It will support heavy construction work in both offshore wind and subsea sectors with net-zero emissions.
On the IMR vessel, Myklebust Verft will install dual-fuel engines capable of running on bio-methanol and biodiesel, along with a battery energy storage system and regenerative energy systems. This vessel is projected to achieve a 90% reduction in emissions when operating on bio-methanol and a 30% decrease when using conventional fuels compared with existing IMR vessels.
Huisman has been awarded a contract from Penta-Ocean Construction Co to deliver a 5,000-tonne tub-mounted crane along with a monopile handling system, including a motion-compensated pile gripper.
Developed collaboratively with Penta-Ocean Construction and vessel designer Ulstein, this equipment concept will integrate the crane and handling tools into Penta-Ocean Construction’s new heavy-lift vessel.
Designed for the Japanese offshore wind market, this vessel will be the world’s first fully integrated heavy-lift vessel, offering one of the highest lifting capacities globally.
