Incat Tasmania has started constructing a 130-m catamaran for Buquebus
The first plate was cut at Incat’s Hobart, Tasmania shipyard, Incat’s linkedIn page announced.
At 13,000 gt, the 130-m long, 32-m wide vessel will carry 2,100 passengers and 220 cars.
Incat said in its post, “Incat 096 will be world’s largest aluminium ferry and the ninth vessel for Incat’s valued South American customer. When the new catamaran enters service between Argentina and Uruguay, it is expected to have a maximum speed of over 40 knots.”
This will be Buquebus’ second LNG dual-fuel powered ferry, following in the footsteps of dual-fuel ferry Francisco, delivered by Incat in 2013.
Four dual-fuel engines will drive Wärtsilä waterjets on the new ferry. The shipyard has previously told PST the duty free shop will be 3,000 m2 – three times as large as it is in Francisco, which also has capacity for 1,000 less passengers than the new ferry.
The new ferry will be 30 m larger than Francisco.
