BC Ferries plans to replace the largest ferries in its fleet through its new major vessel programme
It plans to construct five to seven newbuilds, with 2,200 lane-metres vehicle capacity and accommodation for 2,100 passengers.
As a first step in the newbuild process, Canada’s BC Ferries has concluded an international competition aimed at selecting the programme’s design agent. After a large number of designers submitted offers, Norwegian design and engineering company LMG Marin has been awarded the role of design agent.
LMG Marin said the design assignment involves two main phases. First, a concept design phase will evaluate vessel dimensions, arrangement, hull materials, propulsion and energy solutions, with the overall goal of achieving a zero-emissions design by using proven technology. The concept design work involves using state-of-the-art hydrodynamic analysis and simulation tools, where LMG Marin intends to seek assistance from highly qualified BC-located competence.
The second phase will further develop the concluded concept design into a basic design and specification package, which will be used as the basis for obtaining firm-price building tenders from shipyards.
The design work will kick off by June this year and completion is planned by early 2024, to be followed by an international newbuild tender process aimed at meeting the goal of operational ferries in service by 2029.
“We are excited to work with LMG Marin as we strive to design modern, innovative and sustainable vessels for the future,” said BC Ferries executive director of shipbuilding Ed Hooper. “We will design and build new ships that will minimise our impact on the planet while continuing our ambition to be leaders in environmental stewardship.”
LMG Marin managing director Torbjørn Bringedal said, “We are honoured to be awarded the role of design agent by one of the world’s biggest ferry operators. It is an important and challenging project that may allow us to implement and scale up already proven low- and zero-emissions solutions into large-size ropax vessels.”
