China’s Hudong Zhonghua Shipbuilding and China Shipbuilding Industry Trading Co, under the China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), won a six-ship LNG newbuilding order from Japan’s Mitsui OSK Lines worth US$1.18Bn
The Chinese yard will collaborate with CNOOC and Cosco Shipping to deliver the latest Changheng series of 174,000 m3 capacity vessels, the second-largest LNG carrier order the yard secured in 2022.
The new class will be developed in line with the latest design concepts adopting a new and optimised shape with high versatility, and integrating the latest generation of double sterns.
Hudong-Zhonghua said its fourth-generation double-skeg line type will help achieve the best match between reducing self-propulsion resistance and improving stern propulsion efficiency. It also obtains excellent propulsion chain integration coupling efficiency, adding that a single day voyage with the new vessels reduces carbon emissions by more than 10 tonnes when compared with the previous generation of LNG carriers.
The builder said, “MOL’s newbuildings will be fitted with GTT’s recently developed new cargo containment system NO96 Super+ that offers a boil-off rate of 0.085% as compared with the previous boil-off rate of 1%.”
The 299-m long ships also feature higher cargo hold loading rates and with loading capacity increased by an additional 800 m3. Each ship is equipped with a reliquefication system with a capacity of 2 tonnes per hour, which can be adapted to different requirements of boil-off gas on different routes.
MOL is due to take delivery of the ships between 2024 and 2026 and they will go on long-term charter to CNOOC Gas & Power Group upon delivery. In December 2021, CNOOC signed two deals with US producer Venture Global LNG to buy 2 mta of LNG from the Plaquemines project and 1.5 mta from its under-construction Calcasieu Pass LNG facility.
Hudong-Zhonghua, a CSSC subsidiary, has previously built LNG carriers for MOL that operate on the Yamal LNG project. In the first week of 2022, Hudong-Zhonghua has received seven orders for LNG carriers and has 23 LNG carriers on its orderbook, with nine under construction.
