Techcross believes its patented engineroom installation method with flow monitoring unit bypass design provides significant savings in installation and operational costs over traditional installations
Techcross, a South Korean company specialising in ballast water management (BWMS) systems, has undertaken its first BWMS engineroom installation using a technique it developed for installation on new tankers, its patented ’Engine Room Solution’.
This installation method, which was developed and patented by Techcross in South Korea in 2016, has until now only been applied to new ships, with this new application the first time it has been used for an existing vessel.
The 50,400-dwt tanker is owned by Horizon Tankers Ltd of Greece and was equipped with one set of the ECS 1000B model BWMS using Techcross’ engineroom solution.
Techcross reported a tanker usually requires a BWMS of the more expensive explosion-proof types or with a separate room on the deck installed for safety reasons.
Techcross’ engineroom solution allowed for installation with a non-explosion proof type, reducing purchasing and installation costs by more than 20%.
An additional benefit of this installation method is that by removing the flow monitoring unit from the deballasting pipes and only keeping the sampling lines, installation costs can be reduced even further by 20% to 30%. Additionally, it reports the long-term costs of maintenance and operation are also reduced.
Moving forward, Techcross plans to apply the engineroom solution to the remaining seven vessels in the Horizon Tanker fleet.
This successful installation was carried out in collaboration with Techcross’ Greek engineering partner, Alpha Marine Consulting, at a Chinese repair shipyard.
According to Techcross, the installation highlights Techcross’ commitment to providing affordable solutions which will be the focus of a marketing drive in Europe.
