Scottish tugboat owner Caledonian Towage has overhauled the propulsion on two of its coastal and harbour tugs
Marine engineering specialist Royston serviced the main and auxiliary engines, associated components and azimuth propulsion units on two tugs operated in the Cromarty Firth, UK.
It inspected and overhauled the engineroom systems on 2006-built Strathdon and Strathdee azimuth stern drive tugs.
Royston serviced the IHI Power Systems’ Niigata main propulsion engines, Yanmar auxiliary and harbour generators, and repaired the fuel injection systems and Z-Peller propulsion units.
Caledonian Towage operates these vessels as part of a fleet of more than 10 vessels in the Cromarty Firth and surrounding North Sea areas. It provides towage and oilfield support services, principally to the Nigg Oil Terminal and Beatrice offshore platform. It also supports offshore windfarm construction in the area.
Royston is an authorised agent for both IHI Power Systems and Yanmar. It combined specialist onboard marine engineering teams and onshore engineering facilities for the fast turnaround of engine parts requiring workshop-based cleaning, repair and maintenance.
Strathdon and Strathdee were serviced while they were docked at Peterhead, Scotland, earlier this year. The range of works included inspecting both main engines, top-end service of the auxiliary engines and a complete overhaul of the harbour set.
The Z-Peller propulsion units were also repaired in line with the OEM guidelines. Royston also inspected and renewed the propeller shaft seals and measured clearances for both gearboxes.
In the Royston workshop, cylinder heads, fuel injectors and fuel pumps from the vessels were dismantled, cleaned and inspected for signs of wear or damage. Necessary repairs were made, and parts replaced.
Following completion of these overhauls, Strathdon and Strathdee undertook sea trials and then resumed their work providing harbour towage and support services to North Sea coastal offshore operators.
