Schottel has introduced a retractable variant of its rim thruster propeller. The new retractable rim thruster (SRT-R), covers the power range up to 500 kW and offers low noise emissions
The internal propeller blades are optimised by computational fluid dynamics and hydrodynamically designed to be highly resistant to cavitation.
The Schottel rim thruster is an electric propulsion system. The electric motor stator is installed in the outer part of the tunnel, while the propeller blades are attached to the inside of the rotor which results in a space-saving, low-weight thruster. It converts electric power directly into propulsion power. Surrounding water continuously cools the electric motor, preventing it from overheating.
The SRT-R can cover a thrust radius of 360° making it more versatile for dynamic positioning operations or as a take-home device. In retracted position, no additional flow resistance is generated.
Like its parent design, the retractable variant features low-level noise and vibration making the thruster suitable for passenger vessels.
The retractable rim thruster is also available as an RT variant. In the retracted position, it functions as a transverse thruster, making it effective in shallow water and its range of application extends from brief docking and casting off in ports to continuous operation with dynamic positioning. It also stands out due to its short response time to steering commands that makes precise dynamic positioning easier.
Schottel is also offering the option of using biodegradable oils so vessels equipped with the SRT-R are compliant with the current VGP regulations of the US Environmental Protection Agency.
