A Singapore-based shipmanager is upgrading connectivity across its fleet by installing a bonded multiple-network service on a bulk carrier
Norse Ship Management is set to upgrade satellite communications on bulk carriers to enhance crew welfare and meet rising commercial requirements.
The Singapore-based shipmanager will install communications hardware on one of its managed bulk carriers to connect with geostationary (GEO) and low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites. Norse Ship Management has contracted Station Satcom to install Viasat subsidiary Inmarsat Maritime’s NexusWave on the bulk carrier as a trial before upgrading crew and business connectivity across its fleet.
NexusWave provides uninterrupted communications across Inmarsat’s Global Xpress GEO satellites for Ka-band and L-band and on Eutelsat OneWeb’s LEO constellation.
It is fully managed bonded connectivity with unlimited data and global coverage for remote access to business and crew welfare applications, offers real-time monitoring services and seamless data exchange between ship and shore.
“Crew welfare is our top priority, and providing a home-like internet experience on board is increasingly vital to keeping our crews happy and motivated,” said Norse Ship Management managing director, Akshay Yadava.
“With growing traffic demands on the commercial side and the need to ensure consistent, high-speed connectivity, we have selected NexusWave to upgrade our current system.”
Installing NexusWave is part of Norse Ship’s digitalisation objectives as it is designed to enable applications to use the combined speed and capacity of all available network underlays simultaneously, rather than relying on a single network at a time.
Inmarsat intends to upgrade NexusWave by integrating its forthcoming high capacity ViaSat-3 Ka-band network.
Norse Ship Management’s satcom upgrade highlights the role of connectivity in digital operations and crew welfare. These themes feature in Session 3: THE CRITICAL VESSEL-PORT INTERFACE at the International Bulk Shipping Conference 2025. View the full programme here.
