During a gala dinner at the end of the first day of the conference, leaders in vessel ownership, technology innovators and environmental strategies won a series of awards at Riviera Maritime Media’s Offshore Support Journal Conference, Exhibition and Awards 2024
Britoil Offshore Services won the inaugural John Westwood Deal of the Year Award 2024, supported by Westwood Global Energy Group, for its acquisition of 30 offshore support vessels (OSVs) from Vroon. This award was established to honour the memory and industry contribution of John Westwood, who provided insight and intelligence into the offshore oil, gas and renewable energy sectors during his lifetime.
Shortlisted entries for this award were Tidewater’s acquisition of 37 platform supply vessels (PSVs) from Solstad for US$577M; AD Ports’ purchase of US$200M worth of OSVs from E-Nav Offshore; Rawabi Energy securing US$1.9Bn in syndicated financing to drive its expansion efforts; and Altera Infrastructure’s restructure of its bank facilities, totalling more than US$600M in secured debt.
For acquiring the 30 OSVs and expanding its fleet through newbuild additions, Britoil chief executive Florent Kirchhoff won the OSJ 2024 Industry Leader Award, sponsored by Uptime International.
"This acquisition ticks a lot of boxes for us and extends the geographic reach," said Mr Kirchhoff. "As an industry we went through hard times, but we are resilient and should celebrate the revival."
Through his leadership, Britoil has doubled the size of the fleet under a modernisation and renewal programme and completed one of the largest deals of the decade.
The OSJ Lifetime Achievement Award, sponsored by DNV, was presented to SEACOR Marine consulting engineer Tim Clerc for his life in the offshore energy industry since 1980 when he joined Zapata Marine Services as a chief engineer, then worked in various positions with Swire Pacific Offshore before joining Seacor Marine as vice president for engineering.
Shipowner of the Year Award was awarded to Edda Wind for its ongoing investment in offshore windfarm commissioning and service vessels to support long-term green projects and contracts.
It beat Britoil, North Star, Tidewater and ADNOC Logistics & Services, which were also shortlisted, to the award.
A Distinguished Service Award was presented to International Support Vessel Owners Association (ISOA) secretary Tony Mason, who is retiring from the position in February 2024 after holding the post since 2006. Jan-Piet Baars will be ISOA’s new secretary.
OSJ’s Offshore Energy Vessel of the Year Award 2024 was presented to Rem Offshore for its 2023-built Rem Power, which was designed and built by Vard as a diesel-electric construction service operation vessel (CSOV) with battery-hybrid propulsion and innovative Rim Drive thrusters.
Shortlisted vessels were IWS Skywalker, the first in a series of battery-hybrid CSOVs capable of zero-emissions operations built by China Merchants Heavy Industry; Norwind Gale, a Vard 4 19 design CSOV, equipped with a 3D motion-compensated gangway and 3D crane and with accommodation for 87 personnel; and Strategic Marine-built HST Swansea, a 27-m hybrid crew transfer vessel with a parallel hybrid system and patented BMT Active fender system.
SEACOR Marine won the Caterpillar-sponsored award for environmental, social and governance (ESG) for its commitment to ESG goals, reducing its carbon footprint through investing in battery-hybrid technology and emissions-reduction technology, promoting ocean health, reducing waste and maintaining a safety-first culture. Shortlisted nominees were ABS for developing the Sustain notation for ships; and TechnipFMC for creating an ESG Scorecard detailing its progress on reducing its carbon footprint, diversity and inclusion, leadership and ethics, outlining its roadmap, goals and progress.
OSJ’s Environmental Award 2024 was won by VPS for its Maress summer campaign where 133 vessels joined forces to save more than 10,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions.
Shortlisted entries were ALP Maritime Services and Royal Roos for a new shore power connection facility at the Port of Rotterdam powered by solar panels; DNV for its Emissions Connect, an accurate real-time emissions monitoring service for shipping companies; Spinergie for its smart fleet management digital platform; and ADNOC Logistics & Services for its commitment to decarbonisation and sustainability with several initiatives, including a 21% decline in carbon intensity emissions and a target to reduce carbon intensity by 40% by 2030.
Innovation honoured
Ocean Infinity won the Offshore Renewables Award 2024 for using advanced technology to reduce emissions and its plans to operate its vessels on green ammonia. It beat Norwegian state energy producer Equinor, nominated for investing in offshore wind, solar and hydrogen to become net-zero by 2050; and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, a leading fund manager for renewable investments, focusing on wind, solar, and bioenergy, to the award.
The OSJ Safety Award 2024, sponsored by Vroon Offshore Services, was presented to vessel owner Olympic Subsea and technology provider ScanReach for developing and installing a personnel tracking system on vessels to improve safety during emergencies.
Shortlisted nominees were DNV for developing a standard and software for assessing a ship’s dynamic positioning capability, ensuring efficient and safe operation; P&O Maritime Logistics, which has created an AI-driven assistant to support crew members, breaking down language barriers, and ADNOC Logistics & Services for implementing an AI analytics system to detect and mitigate safety hazards on marine units, reducing incident rates by 80%.
Wärtsilä ANCS won the Dynamic Positioning Award 2024, sponsored by Damen, for its SmartDrive joystick control with DP capability, over DNV for its DynCap dynamic simulations for walk-to-work operations and Norwegian Electric Systems for its collaboration with Undheim Systems for semi-autonomous and autonomous vessel capabilities.
OSJ Innovation of the Year Award 2024, sponsored by Corvus Energy, was won by GustoMSC for its telescopic leg crane that allows for a hook height of over 160 m above the main deck, enabling installation of wind turbines with hub heights exceeding 180 m above sea level and weights over 1,000 tonnes.
Shortlisted nominees were OneStep Power Solutions for the D4V concept that improves testing capabilities on OSVs by installing high-speed test points and data loggers for fast, safe and reliable validation; and MJR Power & Automation for its system converting medium-voltage AC power into compatible DC power for crew transfer vessel propulsion and battery systems, with a vessel connection and mooring system.
