Oldendorff Carriers will install the cylindrical wind-power units on a 100,000 dwt bulker after concluding an agreement with the wind-assisted propulsion technology developer Norsepower
Bulker Dietrich Oldendorff will install three 24-m Norsepower Rotor Sails to cull CO2 emissions. The ship is contracted to be employed on a North Pacific trade route to Asia.
A modernised version of the Flettner rotor, the Norsepower Rotor Sail uses a small amount of electricity to spin the cylinder on the deck which, combined with the wind, creates the Magnus effect used to generate thrust supporting the main propulsion with the goal of reducing fuel consumption, emissions and fuel costs. Finland-based Norsepower said these huge, spinning rotors are partly manufactured from “approximately 342,000 plastic bottles.”
Norsepower counts Vale, Mitsui OSK Lines and Maersk Tankers among its clients, adding its Rotor Sail technology has 310,000+ operating hours on commercial ships operated by some of the world’s best-known shipping companies and charterers.
The installation on Dietrich Oldendorff will take place in Q2 2024.
Oldendorff Carriers director of research and development Torsten Barenthin said, “We are excited about reducing fuel consumption and emissions by harnessing the power of the wind with Norsepower Rotor Sails, a proven energy-saving product.”
Norsepower chief executive Tuomas Riski added, “Oldendorff is a dream customer for Norsepower in more than one way: a family owned, legendary company with over 100 years operating in the industry and around 700 vessels on the water today. Oldendorff is making green shipping a reality today and is the best partner we could have on our journey towards the zero-carbon industry.”
