RWE and Masdar have welcomed a decision to approve the Development Consent Order (DCO) for the Dogger Bank South (DBS) offshore windfarms, as a DCO is also granted for RWE and SSE’s North Falls project
The proposed Dogger Bank South windfarms, DBS West and DBS East, are expected to have a combined installed capacity of 3 GW and would be capable of producing enough electricity to power the equivalent of approximately three million UK homes annually.
The windfarms are located more than 100 km off the northeast coast of England, secured Contracts for Difference (CfD) with the UK Government through the Allocation Round 7 (AR7).
The DCO application was originally made in June 2024, with over 1,000 documents submitted to the Planning Inspectorate for review, and 10 online examination hearings being held.
RWE and Masdar will now conduct detailed final design work and progress procurement decisions with the aim of taking a final investment decision in 2027. The projects are being developed as a joint venture between RWE (51%) and Masdar (49%).
RWE and SSE are developing the 1-GW North Falls project in a joint venture, North Falls Offshore Wind Farm.
The project is approximately 40 km from the East Anglia coast at its nearest point and would be an extension to the southern array of the existing 504-MW Greater Gabbard 1 offshore windfarm.
The DCO for North Falls allows for the construction of up to 57 wind turbine generators, their associated foundations and up to two offshore substation platforms and associated foundations.
Following DCO, the project will fine tune its designs in order to determine the final installed capacity.
