Port of Gothenburg has started the Skandia Gateway expansion construction project by awarding a SKr202M (US$22M) contract to Boskalis for blasting and dredging works.
Skandia Gateway, a collaboration between the Swedish Maritime Administration, the Swedish Transport Administration and the Port of Gothenburg, will increase capacity for larger ships entering the port.
Dredging will deepen the fairway into the harbour enabling vessels with 17.5 m draughts, compared with today’s maximum vessel draught of 13.5 m.
Port of Gothenburg has been carrying out extensive quay reinforcement works at the port’s container terminal as a prerequisite for the upcoming dredging and blasting works.
It has started preparing for the blasting and first dredging programme, scheduled to take place from October 2026 to March 2027.
Once the port’s works are completed, the Swedish Maritime Administration will assume responsibility for dredging the fairway outside the terminal area, from the basin and out towards the port entrance, starting in Q4 2027.
The port authority said dredging was required to enable Scandinavia’s largest port to continue welcoming larger container ships, as the current fairway depth already limits the ability of large vessels to call at the port when fully loaded.
