Four gas carriers under construction at Hyundai Heavy Industries shipyards for gas shipping owner Purus Marine will feature the latest Wärtsilä cargo handling systems (CHS)
Purus ordered all four 45,000-m3 dual-fuel ammonia-ready medium-sized gas carriers at Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD) in April. The vessels are under construction with delivery slated for 2025 and 2026 and are expected to primarily carry ammonia.
Hyundai Mipo Dockyard has in turn placed orders for Wärtsilä cargo handling systems that will be installed on these ships. The CHS orders were booked by Wärtsilä in Q4 2023. HMD is a key customer of Wärtsilä in the region’s medium gas carrier market, and the two companies have co-operated on several newbuild projects.
The Wärtsilä equipment is scheduled for delivery to Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in Q3 2024, and the first of the four ships is expected to commence commercial operations in the latter half of 2025.
“This order further strengthens our position in the medium gas carrier market in South Korea. We are delighted to continue our close relationship with HMD for this class of ships, and we are pleased to add Purus to our impressive list of references,” said Wärtsilä Gas Solutions sales manager, cargo handling systems, Patrick Ha.
Last week, Purus placed orders for two very large ethane carriers worth US$170M each at Hyundai. Both 98,000-m3 ships will be delivered in 2026 and 2027 and move into long-term time charters.
Wärtsilä is selling its Gas Solutions unit which provides gas processing systems. The unit will be moved to the portfolio business for divestment.
