Italy-based multinational classification RINA has awarded a new class notation it is calling 'Digital Ship Notation'.
RINA awarded its first set of the new notations to 11 ships in the Italy-based Grandi Navi Veloci (GNV) fleet.
The class society said it is the first additional class notation available for shipowners who are “willing to demonstrate the added value of their ship or fleet through the efficient use of digital technology” and that it should serve to underscore the benefits of fleet performance optimisation and data analysis.
RINA executive vice president Paolo Moretti said “Digitalisation is set to change the marine industry driving new levels of operational understanding while optimising systems. As a class society, we recognise that the digital journey has only just begun, but it is our firm intention to lead the shipping industry in the development and application of this technology to drive down costs and increase operational efficiency.”
GNV's digital-classed fleet of 11 ships are all equipped with a data collection system, part of a joint project with RINA launched in 2012 as the forerunner to the digital ship classification's wider fleet performance management focus.
RINA said they will consider awarding the digital ship notation to ships fitted with navigation technology and condition-based monitoring systems capable of transmitting data to shore for storage in RINA's database.
RINA has invested in its own platform, called RINACube, which launched in December 2017. The cloud-based platform can gather and integrate data and digital assets from various sources and RINA said it “interacts seamlessly with most common technologies on board”.
RINA said the notation has the potential to be included, in the future, as a newbuild classification requirement.
