MOL, Samsung and Mitsui OSK have jointly developed a tank wall-climbing robot for use in inspections
Three companies, Sumitomo Heavy Industries, Mitsui OSK Lines and MOL Ship Management are developing a hull and tank wall climbing robot that can move to high places that were previously difficult to access by humans or robots, and can take photographs and inspections of the relevant areas.
The device is capable of measuring the thickness of steel plates by remote operation by the operator and not only avoids the dangers of working at heights, but also eliminates the need for scaffolding, reducing labour costs and scaffolding costs.
ClassNK has granted its Innovation Endorsement for Products & Solutions certification for the robot to inspect hull, ballast tank and boiler spaces and acquire thickness measurements and images.
The certification recognises the reduction of hazards to workers, and the reduction of the time-consuming and risky assembly of scaffolding.
The certification covers: Remote inspection in high places and various other locations such as hull planning, ballast tank, and boiler. Acquisition of data necessary for periodic maintenance by equipping measurement tools such as thickness gauges and cameras. Reduction of hazardous tasks for workers by remote operation. And reduction of ancillary tasks such as scaffolding construction work.
