An offshore drilling and engineering contractor is using AI tools to improve machinery maintenance and safety on a drillship and offshore construction vessel
Saipem is introducing an artificial intelligence (AI)-based predictive maintenance system to monitor drilling machinery on its ultra-deepwater drillship.
The Italian shipowner aims to improve operational efficiency, machinery maintenance and offshore safety on Saipem 12000 by using AI to analyse real-time data and generate performance insights and advice.
Algorithms will monitor equipment condition, predict potential failures and schedule interventions before problems occur, thereby reducing downtime and management costs.
Saipem 12000 is the first vessel in the company’s drilling fleet to adopt this system, and this pilot project could be extended across other assets.
According to Saipem, continuous data analysis will enable anomalies to be detected quickly, enabling it to plan targeted interventions, increasing reliability and safety.
Saipem is working with ADC Energy on this project as it extends the use of AI and data analytics across the group’s diverse fleet.
The Milan, Italy-headquartered offshore contractor is implementing another predictive maintenance project on its semi-submersible crane vessel, Saipem 7000, focused on power production machinery.
This project involves sensors on diesel generators providing real-time data to machine learning models to detect early signs of potential failures. Developed in collaboration with consultants BIP, this programme will enable maintenance to be planned more efficiently and ensure operational continuity of these generators, said Saipem, which expects testing to begin in Q2 2026.
“Through these projects, Saipem reaffirms its commitment to integrating AI, predictive analytics, and advanced digital tools to make its offshore energy operations increasingly safe, efficient, and sustainable,” said Saipem.
