Samos Steamship's Anthony and John Inglessis launch separate shipping ventures

As reported by Riviera in early May, Anthony Inglessis now leads Carlova Maritime, a company currently managing a fleet of three vessels, according to its official website.

Meanwhile, shipping data platforms have identified a second newly launched company, JHI Steamship Co, headed by John Inglessis, received approval from the Greek Ministry of Maritime Affairs in February to open an office in Greece.

JHI Steamship positions itself as the “direct continuation of Samos Steamship,” emphasising its roots in a family tradition with over 150 years of shipping history.

Market sources describe the separation between the two cousins as friendly, reflecting a mutual decision to pursue individual paths. These sources also note Samos Steamship is expected to continue operating for the foreseeable future, supported by long-term charter agreements – some extending up to five years. However, the company’s status beyond the conclusion of these contracts remains undecided.

Fleet expansion and strategy

According to JHI’s website, the company currently manages three bulk carriers – all previously listed under Samos Steamship: London Spirit (built in 2007), Proteus (2023) and Karlovasi (2023). In the coming months, JHI’s fleet is expected to grow significantly, reaching 13 vessels – comprising five bulk carriers and eight tankers – along with four additional ships under construction (three bulk carriers and one tanker), slated for delivery in 2026.

JHI Steamship underscores its commitment to growth through a fleet comprising vessels built at top-tier Japanese shipyards. Its chartering strategy is described as balanced and is supported by the expertise of a long-standing London-based representative office.

The company also highlights its managerial positions are covered by shipping professionals with extensive experience, and adds its network of crew agencies remains unchanged.

Legacy and future

The Inglessis family’s shipping legacy dates back nearly 150 years, with early operations based on the island of Samos. Samos Steamship was officially founded in 1911.

Today, the company’s website states it operates a modern fleet of 21 tankers and bulk carriers. Notably, the newbuilding section of Samos Steamship’s website has been removed, possibly signalling the remaining under-construction tonnage will transition to the management of the new companies.

Carlova Maritime currently oversees two Aframax tankers and one Capesize bulk carrier, all previously under the Samos Steamship banner. The company notes on its site, “Along with 90% of shore personnel from Samos Steamship Co, Carlova Maritime Co upholds the long tradition of running very high-quality vessels, maintained with the best standards and retains a loyal pool of seafarers and shore staff, continuing to grow in both market segments, bulk carriers and tankers.”
