IoT technology with AI-powered analytics software has been developed for vessel applications
Samsung Electronics has partnered with Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) shipbuilding division to incorporate internet of things (IoT) technology into newbuild vessels.
SmartThings can be used to monitor vessel performance, energy use and to control lighting and other onboard systems. It will use artificial intelligence (AI) and the Matter open standard for IoT on vessels of all sizes, from yachts to cruise ships.
Samsung Electronics head of product marketing Sean Michael said SmartThings will be available for various digital applications. “This is a new integration that uses Matter, the connectivity standard, to connect with compatible ships,” he said. “We are bringing SmartThings Pro to a new category.”
SmartThings will have a care mode with a checklist before a vessel departs; while on passenger ships it could provide itineraries and information about the vessel.
This drive is part of Samsung’s wider SmartThings Pro initiative across multiple industries with AI-powered services providing information and insight to users. Samsung said SmartThings will help users to better understand their energy usage, identify machinery requiring maintenance and control their connected systems.
Under current plans, SmartThings devices will be launched which are dedicated to marine applications. A presailing mode would be used to automate engine startup and other vessel equipment and settings; a care mode would control a vessel’s power and electrical system; and a protection mode would monitor operations and generate alerts for any abnormal activities.
SmartThings for Ships would be viewed by crew on a dedicated and centralised Samsung dashboard on various electronic devices on a vessel.
These developments were announced during a Samsung presentation at the Consumer Electronics Show 2025, held in Las Vegas in January 2025.
The first application of SmartThings for Ships is on autonomous research vessel Shift-Auto, built by SHI for South Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and launched in November 2024.This 12-passenger catamaran was built specifically for autonomous navigation research, with SmartThings IoT collating and processing real-time data. It can navigate and dock automatically without crew involved.
Riviera’s Maritime Decarbonisation Conference Asia, will be held in Singapore, 15-16 April 2024 where experts and shipowners will examine the most viable decarbonisation pathways for Asia’s shipping industry. This conference will bring together the latest thinking and developments on net-zero strategies, regulations, technologies, supply chain maturity and economics.
