Kuok (Singapore) Limited Maritime Group (KSL) has launched the Coastal Sustainability Alliance (CSA) which aims to cut CO2 emissions from harbour vessels by 50% and reduce marine traffic by 20%
CSA members include the Agency for Science, Technology and Research, GenPlus, Jurong Port Singapore, Sea Forrest, Technology Centre for Offshore and Marine, Singapore (TCOMS), and TES.
The Alliance is expected to invest more than S$20M (US$15M) over the next 10 years to build the next generation of Singapore’s maritime ecosystem and accelerate decarbonisation, electrification and energy-efficient logistics and engineering by 2030.
PaxOcean chief executive and chairperson of the CSA Council Tan Thai Yong said the Alliance will design a series of fully electric PXO harbour vessels and floating platforms for wireless offshore charging.
The PXO conceptual redesign is expected to be revealed later this year. The aim is to deploy 10 PXO-designed vessels by 2025, with plans to extend the ecosystem internationally from 2027 onwards. Using AI, a digital twin of the vessel will undergo simulations to improve energy efficiency for harbour craft. Additionally, integrating with TCOMS’ digital twin of Singapore’s port waters will support the predictive optimisation of marine traffic, harbour fleets and logistics flow and develop remotely managed vessels and drones in the coastal network.
To reduce e-waste and build an e-charging infrastructure network, CSA will reuse electric vehicle batteries as optimised modular battery packs to serve as energy storage systems for marine use. A network of shore and mobile e-charging points along Singapore’s coastline will enable shore-to-ship and ship-to-ship charging of the PXO vessels and platforms.
To reduce marine traffic by 20%, CSA will use fleet optimisation services and begin a fleet renewal process. More than 30% of Singapore’s current fleet of harbour craft is over 20 years old.
CSA is looking to use larger lightering vessels that can deliver to multiple vessels, and drones installing mobile floating platforms in selected locations in coastal waters off Singapore, and sea and aerial drones for last-mile deliveries to improve operational range and reduce downtime.
Mr Tan said, “Our Alliance is committed to making this a reality, and we encourage further industry collaborations to scale the coastal ecosystem. We welcome more partners to join us on this journey.”
