E-Flexer ferry Stena Estelle will transit the Gdynia-Karlskrona route
Stena Line has held the naming ceremony for its newest ferry, which will sail the Baltic Sea between Poland and Sweden.
One of Stena’s E-Flexer ferries, the 240-m, 1,200-passenger vessel is one of two sister ships that will boost Stena Line’s operations in the Baltic region. Stena Ebba is expected to join the fleet later in 2022.
Both ships are “up to 30% more energy efficient” than previous vessels in the fleet and all of Stena’s E-Flexers will be delivered gas-ready, to allow conversion to methanol or LNG fuel. The two vessels are equipped to use shore power during port calls to reduce emissions and can be converted to battery hybrids in the future.
The ships are among the world’s most modern and efficient ropax vessels. The first three of Stena’s E-Flexer vessels began operations on the Irish Sea during 2020 and 2021.
Stena Estelle and sister Stena Ebba are the two largest E-Flexer ferries delivered and will provide a boost to the Karlskrona-Gdynia route’s capacity. The vessels have 263 cabins and an overall freight capacity of 3,600 lane metres, which means they can carry 15% more cargo than current E-Flexers.
The deployment of the two large E-Flexers is the latest investment in the Baltic Sea expansion of Stena Line, which so far includes the modernisation of the fleet on Nynäshamn-Ventspils and Travemünde-Liepaja routes, and the setup of a new route from Nynäshamn to Hanko.
“The Baltic Sea is an economic area that is still characterised by dynamic growth. Customer demand is growing on a daily basis, and we are in the lucky position to cater for this demand, not only with the right service attitude and hard work, but also with a modern and efficient fleet. And when we can add a beautiful new ship like Stena Estelle on a day like this, we are even more convinced that the success of the last years in this region has only been a start,” Stena Line chief executive Niclas Mårtensson said.
