Stena Scandica arrived in the port of Nynäshamn this morning when it completed its overnight maiden voyage from Ventspils
Stena Scandica is 222 m long and has a capacity of 200 cabins, 970 passengers and 2,875 freight lane metres as well as an extra car deck – adding 30% freight capacity and 70% more cabins on the route.
The vessel is the first of two Visentini vessels that are being lengthened and modernised by Stena RoRo at the Sedef Shipbuilding in Tuzla, Turkey.
Stena Scandica is fitted with emissions mitigation measures and fuel efficiency improvements, such as hybrid scrubbers, ballast water cleaning systems and a twisted leading edge rudder. The vessel’s increased tonnage also means a lower emission per transported unit for its carbon intensity. The interior includes new cabin categories, a shop, lounge areas and multiple dining facilities, as well as a sundeck.
“We see ropax as our key competitive advantage... therefore, we will continue to combine freight and passengers. These two new vessels represent... a first step towards our ambitious plan to double the number of passengers on the Baltic Sea route in three years,” said Stena trade director Baltic Sea North Johan Edelman.
Stena Scandica (ex-Stena Lagan) and sister vessel Stena Baltica (ex-Stena Mersey) were lengthened with a 36 m mid-section to 222 m long. To increase the loading efficiency, the vessels are modified with drive-through capabilities on two levels.
Ventspils–Nynäshamn is the shortest route between the Baltics and Scandinavia. When Stena Scandica and Stena Baltica take over the route, they will replace Stena Livia and Stena Flavia, which will then be redeployed on the Liepāja–Travemünde route.
