Swedish firm Terntank has placed a new order for an oil and chemical tanker with China Merchants Jinling Shipyard and secured an option for a second vessel
The 15,000-dwt tanker -- and the additional vessel, if built -- will feature wind-assisted propulsion and dual-fuel engines capable of operating on MGO, biofuels or methanol.
Delivery for the first vessel is set for Q1 2027. This will be the 10th such vessel the yard will build for Terntank in a relationship that stretches back to 2014.
The vessel will also feature a hybrid-battery system and onshore power, marking a significant step towards reducing environmental impacts. Terntank said it will leverage insights from its nine-vessel CMJL series to further cut CO2 emissions and drive Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) ratings well below the 2025 Phase III requirements.
Its 14-segregation design optimises bio feedstock and finished goods transport, supporting customer sustainability goals. Capable of operating on advanced fuels such as green methanol and e-methanol, this vessel is crucial to achieving Terntank’s zero-emissions goal by 2040.
This latest investment follows Terntank’s previous announcements of three similar dual-fuel tankers scheduled for delivery in 2025, designed by Kongsberg and currently under construction at China Merchants Jinling Shipyard, Yangzhou.
Earlier this year, Neste signed a time charter agreement with Terntank for two of those product tankers that will transport liquid cargoes including renewable raw materials like waste and residue oils and fats to Neste’s refineries.
