Erik Thun Group orders two AccessMAX product tankers for constrained routes
Erik Thun Group has ordered two new AccessMAX product tankers, a design intended for constrained waterways and niche port access.
The company said the ships combine Lake Vänern-compliant dimensions with shallow-draught capability and an increase in cargo intake of about 10% compared with earlier generations of product tankers designed for similar trades.
Erik Thun Group managing director Johan Källsson said the order reflects an operational requirement rather than a conceptual change in approach, “AccessMAX is a practical step for our customers and ports. By combining shallow-draft capability with the increased intake, we can serve Lake Vänern and similar constrained waterways reliably while maintaining the efficiency and care that define our family company.”
The vessels are tailored for operations where access constraints shape ship design and voyage execution, while still allowing flexibility for wider northwest European trading.
Thun Tankers chief commercial officer Joakim Lund said the specification starts from route reality. “These vessels will be engineered for the realities of our trade with restricted approaches, tight locks, and future cargo needs. AccessMAX design will enable businesses situated in restricted ports to develop and grow in a sustainable manner.”
The AccessMAX newbuildings are due for delivery in 2028 and 2029 and will have principal dimensions of 89 m length overall, 13 m beam, 4,500 dwt, ice class 1A and air draught in ballast of 18 m.
Riviera is to present the Erik Thun Group with the International Product Tanker Company of the Year Award at the International Chemical & Product Tanker Conference 2026.
The award recognises outstanding operational performance, innovation and safety leadership in the global product tanker sector, honouring a company that sets benchmarks in efficiency, sustainability and customer service.
