A shipyard in Turkey has been contracted to build two harbour tugboats for a South American owner modernising its fleets in Colombia and Mexico
Turkish builder Sanmar Shipyards is building a Bogacay tugboat for Ultratug Mexico and has now gained a contract to build a similar tug for Ultratug Colombia.
Both tugs will be built to Robert Allan Ltd’s RAmparts 2400SX-MKII design, which the naval architect developed exclusively for Sanmar.
These vessels have an overall length of 24 m, least moulded depth of around 5 m and navigational draught of 5 m, plus a bollard pull over the stern of 75 tonnes and a free running speed of approximately 12 knots.
Sanmar said the Bogacay tug for Ultratug Colombia will have two CAT 3516E main engines, each producing 2,200 kW at 1,600 rpm, connected to Caterpillar SCR exhaust gas aftertreatment systems for reducing NOx emissions for compliance with IMO Tier III standards. It will also have a FiFi1 off-ship fire-fighting system to support emergency response.
Scheduled to be delivered in Q3 2026, this new tug will have accommodation for up to eight crew , with two single-berth cabins in the deckhouse and three double cabins below deck.
Chile-headquartered Ultratug’s operations in Colombia include branch offices in the main ports of Santa Marta, Barranquilla, Cartagena, Coveñas and Buenaventura and services are provided in other Colombian ports such as Tolu, Puerto Brisa and Tumaco.
“This new acquisition reflects Ultratug’s strong commitment to maintaining a modern fleet equipped with cutting edge technology, and to continuing to be a trusted partner for our clients,” said Ultratug Colombia manager Silvia Herrera.
Bogacay tugs are designed for optimal efficiency in shiphandling duties and have a 12-m moulded beam, “which is wider than usual for tugs of this size and class, enabling greater performance and stability,” said Sanmar commercial director Rüçhan Civgin.
“Our latest Bogacay-series tugs are leaders in their class when it comes to operational capabilities, advanced technology, environmental compliance and exceptional performance. Their strength is that they continue to evolve, taking on board advances in technology as they become available.”
Ultratug ordered a new harbour tug from Sanmar Shipyards for its Mexican operations in January 2025 to be deployed at Lazaro Cardenas Port to service large container ships visiting Mexico’s biggest terminal.
