Satellite communications has advanced so much that offshore support vessels can be considered as offices at sea with seafarers, contractors and clients able to access the connectivity they get onshore
Inmarsat Maritime developed NexusWave to provide hybrid connectivity between networks to offshore support vessels and merchant shipping.
NexusWave integrates Inmarsat Ka-band and L-band geostationary orbiting satellites, Eutelsat OneWeb’s low Earth orbit (LEO) constellation, and long-term evolution (LTE) mobile networks in a bonded solution to provide that connectivity experience.
Inmarsat Maritime’s market development director Audra Drablos says this solution enables people on board vessels to access applications that require low latency over LEO satellites.
She was speaking in an interview at Riviera’s Offshore Support Journal Conference, Middle East, in Dubai in December 2024.
Ms Drablos says reliable L-band and Ka-band connectivity is crucial and NexusWave is cyber secure by design, all the traffic is encrypted and there are firewalls protecting the network.
