When it comes to decarbonising international shipping, there are many critics that say IMO’s greenhouse gas reduction strategy does not push the maritime industry far and fast enough.
“At least it’s a good start,” counters DNV business development director Jan Hagen Andersen.
Speaking with Riviera Maritime Media executive editor and head of business development Edwin Lampert, Mr Andersen says, “We need to see how the short-term measures work,” before modifying the strategy on the maritime industry’s decarbonisation efforts.
Still, he said, “The industry needs to start early, collaborating with different stakeholders, and focus on the decarbonisation stairway,” to decide on the best pathway, “not only to meet the requirements from a regulatory perspective, but also from the other stakeholders — the cargo owners, the shippers and the general maritime customer base.”
Mr Andersen was part of a panel, ‘COP26 and its impact on the maritime industry,’ at Maritime Air Pollution and Fuel Technologies Americas 2022 in Houston in April.
