How do shipowners meet regulations that are not yet fully fleshed out? Noting IMO is a consensus organisation, known for its practicality, RADM Kevin S Cook, USCG (ret), Maritime Consultant, IRI, The Marshall Island Registry, said, “The regulations that do emerge can lead to the reductions we need and will be met by shipowners.”
Speaking with Riviera Maritime Media executive editor and head of business relations Edwin Lampert, Admiral Cook said usually these regulations contain a phase-in period, meaning that shipowners have an opportunity to “know what’s ahead of them.”
IMO is moving to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, he noted, adding, “There is a very clear roadmap ahead with IMO, and I think it is going to lead to the reductions people are looking for.”
Admiral Cook participated in a panel discussion, “COP26 and its impact on the maritime industry’ at Maritime Air Pollution and Fuel Technologies Americas 2022, which was held 21-22 April 2022 in Houston, Texas.
